With Phase Two expansion complete and U. S. Steel acquiring the remaining equity in Big River Steel, 2021 is paving the way for continued growth at the world’s first Flex Mill®.

Throughout 2020, Phase Two construction was done on the world’s first Flex Mill®. In November, the expansion was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

As 2019 begins, Big River Steel is starting Phase Two construction which will double the output of the world’s first Flex Mill®.

In 2018 Big River Steel saw great progress with product development, moving quickly into niche steels, specifically electrical and AHSS grades.

2017 was Big River Steel’s first full year of production – and it was record setting. A new production record was established in terms of tons of steel produced in the first month by a SMS group supplied flat-rolled mini mill: over 63,000 tons of hot rolled steel was produced in January 2017.

Before the first hot rolled coil was produced in December 2016, the final phases of construction and commissioning of equipment took place throughout the year.

2014 – 2015

After breaking ground in July 2014, Big River Steel’s journey to become the world’s first Flex Mill® officially began. Built in an area of northeast Arkansas that is often called “steel mill heaven”, Big River’s first processing lines were operational just nineteen months later.
